Book Review: “Rejoice in the Lord” inspired by St. Augustine of Hippo

I have always been enamored by St. Augustine’s writings. I’ve read his Confessions multiple times, as well as many of his other works. “Rejoice in the Lord, “ a 30-day reflection booklet based on the writings of St. Augustine, was a wonderful opportunity to dive into the work of this incredible theologian. Written in a manner easy to understand, it still manages to preserve much of the beauty found in the original writings. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to know St. Augustine, and their own hearts, better.

Each day’s reflection comes in three parts: a morning meditation written from the perspective of God, a short verse to meditate on throughout the day, and an evening meditation written from our own perspective. In a very creative way, “Rejoice in the Lord” transforms St. Augustine’s words into our own, and we are given the ability to hear the voice of God speaking through the great saint. Readers are encouraged to read the meditations according to the schedule provided, but changes can be made to suit everyone’s individual needs.

“Rejoice in the Lord” is a wonderful little book for Catholics and Christians looking to add a short period of meditation into their daily prayer life. If you want to learn a bit about St. Augustine, but don’t have the time or energy to read the entirety of his very voluminous collection of works, this book is for you. With short, meaningful reflections and beautifully written prayers, this book will give you so many reasons to rejoice in the Lord.
